Accessibility statement

This site is built to WCAG 2.1 Level AA and Section 508, and tested against both. Where we fall short, we want to hear about it.

TECKpert builds accessible software for government, so this website is held to the same standard as the work. Accessibility here is a build requirement checked on every deploy, not a review done once at launch.

The standard we build to

This site conforms to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at Level AA, and to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Conformance is built at the component level rather than added afterwards, which is the same approach we take on client work.

How we test

Automated, every deployEvery page is checked with axe-core against the WCAG 2.1 A and AA rulesets plus Section 508, at desktop, tablet and mobile widths. A failure stops the deploy.
Contrast, measuredText and interface colours are checked against the backgrounds they actually sit on rather than assumed. Ratios are recorded alongside the fix.
KeyboardEvery control is reachable and operable by keyboard, focus is visible throughout, and a skip link leads to the main content.
Screen readersPages are reviewed with a screen reader, and headings, landmarks and form labels are checked by hand.
MotionAnimation respects the reduced motion setting in your operating system. Nothing moves that you have asked not to move.
Text and zoomLayouts hold at 200 percent zoom without loss of content or horizontal scrolling.

Accessibility tools on this site

An accessibility widget is available from the button in the lower left of every page. It offers contrast and text size adjustments, a readable font option, link highlighting and a reading guide. It is a convenience, not a substitute for the conformance work above.

Images, documents and forms

Images that carry meaning have alternative text. Images that are decorative are marked as such, so a screen reader passes over them rather than reading a filename aloud.

Forms are labelled and grouped, work with a screen reader, and report errors in text rather than by color alone.

Some material is published as PDF. We tag PDFs for screen readers where we can, and where a document is not yet accessible we will provide the same information in another format on request.

Known limitations

Two areas sit outside our direct control. Video hosted by a third party may carry captions we did not author. Documents received from a client and published as received may not meet the standard. In both cases, ask us and we will provide an accessible alternative.
